Paulina Bull obtained her professional title of Biochemist at the Universidad de Chile (1974). Her undergraduate thesis was on studies of the active site of RNA polymerase from E. coli, under the direction of Pablo Valenzuela. She obtained her Doctoral Degree at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1980) on Structure and active site of yeast RNA polymerase I, under the direction of Pablo Valenzuela. She did her academic carrier at the Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1975 2015), teaching and mentoring undergraduate and doctoral students. From 1988 to 1989 she was Visiting Scientist at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, La Jolla California USA, in the laboratories of Inder M. Verma and Tony Hunter with a Fogarty Fellowship. Her aim is to understand the molecular mechanisms which participate in the regulation of gene expression at the transcriptional level from different points of view: a) active site and quaternary structure of RNA polymerases, b) transcription factors and promoters they bind to, c) structure and expression of different genes, d) isolation and study of mouse proto-oncogene c-rel as an early response gene, and e) demonstration that the c-REL protein is a transcription factor involved in the regulation of cancer and the immune system. Besides, she participated in the obtention of the hepatitis B recombinant vaccine. Among other Prizes, she obtained the Prize “Colegio de Químicos Farmacéuticos de Chile” al mejor alumno de la promoción de la Facultad de Ciencias Químicas (1972)” and Prize “Abate Juan Ignacio Molina Primer Científico Chileno: Investigadora Destacada Asociación Chilena de Periodismo Científico” (1980). Her hobbies are painting, piano playing and Choir singing.
